Indian aunties are older women who hold a revered position in desi culture. They are seen as maternal figures who provide love, guidance and wisdom, even if not related by blood. Aunties are known for their blunt honesty and lack of filter – they freely voice opinions on everything from weight gain to complexion to marital status.
While the term “auntie” is used as a sign of respect and affection, it has also taken on a mocking and derisive tone in recent times. Aunties are often stereotyped as interfering busybodies who stick their nose in their neighbors’ business.
